Top Ten Books Every Memoir Lover, Should Read.
1.) Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling.
“I believe the potluck tradition of entertaining is the equivalent
of a teenage boy wanting to have sex with his girlfriend but who
is too scared to go to CVS to buy condoms. If you can’t handle
providing all the courses for your dinner party, you can’t
handle the hosting duties of a dinner party.”
― Mindy Kaling, Why Not Me?
2.) Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea by Chelsea Handler.
“I went out with a guy who once told me I didn’t need to drink
to make myself more fun to be around. I told him, I’m drinking
so that you’re more fun to be around.”
― Chelsea Handler, Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea
3.) Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang by Chelsea Handler.
“It’s true what they say about patience being a virtue;
it just happens to be a virtue that I choose not to pursue.”
― Chelsea Handler, Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang
4.) My Horizontal Life by Chelsea Handler.
“Our relationship finally ended when he took to waking me
up in the wee hours of the morning when he would go surfing.
He thought it might be fun to have me come watch.
“Fun for who?” I wanted to ask. I had never asked him
to come to Happy Hour and watch me drink.”
― Chelsea Handler, My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands
5.) You’ll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again by Heather McDonald.
“Lobster is not going to be as tasty with ice tea
unless that ice tea is from Long Island.”
― Heather McDonald, You’ll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again:
One Woman’s Painfully Funny Quest to Give It Up
6.) The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.
“No one expected you to amount to much,” she told me.
“Lori was the smart one, Maureen the pretty one, and Brian
the brave one. You never had much going for you except
that you always worked hard.”
― Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle
7.) Tiger Tiger by Margaux Fragoso.
“You used to say it was just me but now you’re saying you did
it with other girls before me. I thought I was special. You said
you fell in love with me.’ Thinking about this, I felt like a power
source with too many of its outlets in use, like my whole
brain was having a blackout.”
― Margaux Fragoso, Tiger, Tiger
8.) Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs.
“My mother began to go crazy. Not in a ‘Let’s paint the kitchen red!’
sort of way. But crazy in a ‘gas oven, toothpaste sandwich,
I am God’ sort of way.”
― Augusten Burroughs, Running with Scissors
9.) A Wolf At The Table by Augusten Burroughs.
“I paused finally and watched the trees for slashes of light,
but saw none. As my heart settled and my ears became less
occupied I listened and heard nothing but the thready pulse
of the night. And I sensed that the hunt was over.
I’d been prey and now I was not. Prey knows this.
Prey knows when it has escaped.”
― Augusten Burroughs, A Wolf at the Table
10.) This Boy’s Life by Tobias Wolff.
“I’ve allowed some of these points to stand, because this is
a book of memory, and memory has its own story to tell.
But I have done my best to make it tell a truthful story.”
― Tobias Wolff, This Boy’s Life
As you can tell, I’m a big Chelsea Handler fan. 😉

Memoirs are a rare read for me! I didn’t know that Running With Scissors was a memoir!

Love love love Chelsea Handler, I still haven’t read that Mindy Kahling book even though it’s been sitting on my dresser for a solid four months by now. I should probably get on that lol. Great List!
Fun topic! I LOVE Mindy Kaling and her books. Great choice!
I used to skip the Non-Fiction section all together, but the last 3 years or so I’ve been all about the memoirs! I love TIna Fey’s Bossypants, and Yes, Please by Amy Poehler is our book club’s literary anthem. I recently read As You Wish by Cary Elwes and Talking to Girls About Duran Duran by Rob Sheffield and really liked both of them. I have plans to read even more in the coming months (I’ve very excited about Alan Cumming’s Not My Father’s Son). I do want to read Mindy Kahling’s books!
My TTT
The only memoirs I have ever read are Yes Please by Amy Poehler and Escape From Slavery by Francis Bok. But, there are so many that I want to get into! Haha I never realized Chelsea Handler had so many out, now I might have to add one of hers to the pile 🙂 Thanks for the recs!
You should, Chelsea is HILARIOUS! 😆
I’ve read Bang Bang by Chelsea Handler. It as super funny and honest!
Yes, I LOVED IT! 🙂
Great list! I love all of the Chelsea Handler books I got them all at a raffle randomly and couldn’t put them down they are so funny!
I don’t read a lot of memoirs, so thank you for the inspiration and list, which I will use as a starting point. You have motivated me to try to read at least a few this year 🙂
🙂
I love memoirs, but I often struggle to find good ones – a lot of these have piqued my curiosity! Great choice for a TTT 🙂
I’m not exactly the biggest fan of memoirs–I haven’t had the best experiences with them in the past–but I’m intrigued by your list here! Might have to check out a few of them. 😀
Same here, I haven’t read many, but they ones I have read, I LOVED! 🙂
I love Chelsea Handler’s books. She’s so funny and the stories she tells are hilarious and disturbing all at the same time. Definitely worth reading.
I’ve never read a memoir… though I lot Chelsea Handler, so I just may need to change that! 🙂
*love
I’ve never read any non-fiction books (at least not for school) but I have heard of a few of these being rather great.
I’m not a big fan of memoirs so I haven’t read any of these, but great list!
I’m not a big fan of memoirs, but I’ve been meaning to try Running With Scissors. I might have to try a couple of the other ones you listed too 🙂
Have to add some of these to my TBR.
I hardly ever read memoirs, but recently I’ve been considering picking one up to give it a go, so thanks for the suggestions! I’m tempted to give Why Not Me? a go, so hopefully I can round to reading one soon!
I read memoirs rarely but I usually love the ones about writing such as Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, and On Writing by Stephen King. Thanks for the suggestions! I really want to read The Glass Castle.
What a neat list. I haven’t read many memoirs so your list has given me some great ideas on where to start. Thanks! And thanks for stopping by my TTT earlier 🙂
I have mixed feelings about memoirs sometimes but since I’ve been trying to read more genres I thought reading a couple this year. I was already thinking about reading Mindy Kaling’s but now I have some more options to choose from. Thanks for stopping by my blog.
The only memoir I’ve ever read was an Audrey Hepburn one but I do like to check Mindy Kaling’s! Thanks for these suggestions and for stopping by!
I love memoirs, I will definitely be checking these out!
Great topic! I don’t read nearly as many memoirs as fiction books, but I have read The Glass Castle and really enjoyed it. Thanks for visiting my TTT earlier 🙂
