Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Mercedes Ayres has an open-door policy when it comes to her bedroom, but only if the guy fulfills a specific criteria: he has to be a virgin. Mercedes lets the boys get their awkward, fumbling first times over with, and all she asks in return is that they give their girlfriends the perfect first time- the kind Mercedes never had herself.
Keeping what goes on in her bedroom a secret has been easy- so far. Her absentee mother isn’t home nearly enough to know about Mercedes’ extracurricular activities, and her uber-religious best friend, Angela, won’t even say the word “sex” until she gets married. But Mercedes doesn’t bank on Angela’s boyfriend finding out about her services and wanting a turn- or on Zach, who likes her for who she is instead of what she can do in bed.
When Mercedes’ perfect system falls apart, she has to find a way to salvage her reputation and figure out where her heart really belongs in the process. Funny, smart, and true-to-life, FIRSTS is a one-of-a-kind young adult novel about growing up.
My Thoughts: This book was not what I thought it was going to be. It was better than I expected. With this subject, I thought it was going to be over the top or full on crude but, thankfully it’s not. A problem I had with this book was sometimes I got bored and wanted to skip around. I will admit, I did skip around a couple times but not a lot. There just seemed to be a lot of unnecessary talking.
Faye was a little weird. Did she or did she not know what was going on from the beginning? Don’t get me wrong, she was a GREAT friend, she did some things that I wouldn’t have done for my friends, but she was still a little off putting. Zach was also a bit weird. I’m sorry but what happened to getting to know someone before you have sex with them. I guess you can expect that from adults, but they were doing too much. He did everything backwards. He had sex, then wanted to date her. Angela’s boyfriend was a creep, and Mercedes’ mom is a big loser.
Mercedes’ reasoning for doing what she does is odd. I understand that her first time wasn’t great at all, but she should mind her own business and just let things happen naturally. Having sex with other girls boyfriends just caused more trouble than it was worth. Who in the right mind even thinks that is acceptable? She wasn’t really helping anyone in the end, she just ruined her own life.
Overall, I did enjoy this book. There were some things that could have been better, but in the end it was very entertaining, so that’s a plus! I gave Firsts, 4 Stars.
